Southside Elite have survived every challenge so far. On Friday, Spartans TT get their chance to change that as the EIG Elite Basketball League returns to the Southern Regional Indoor Complex, Pleasantville, for a double-header with plenty at stake.

The September 25 programme opens at 7:30 p.m. with TTPS facing a Morvant Oilbirds team still searching for its first victory, before unbeaten Southside meet Spartans at 9 p.m. With the first round drawing to a close, Friday offers an opportunity to build momentum before the competition begins its next chapter.

Spartans take aim at Southside’s perfect start

Southside enter with a perfect 4-0 record, fresh from an 86-80 victory over NCA Warriors. Jason Friday and Jelani Valley each scored 24 points in that contest, while Akheem Boyd added 20. Valley also pulled down 12 rebounds, with Friday contributing six rebounds and six assists.

Southside Elite enter Friday with four wins from four games.

That spread of production helps explain why Southside have been so difficult to beat. Friday averages 18.8 points per game, Boyd contributes 18.0, and Tyrik Singh adds 15.0. Valley, meanwhile, averages 16.3 points and a league-leading 13.3 rebounds across his three appearances, giving Southside a major presence around the basket.

Spartans arrive at 2-2 after a commanding 97-73 win over Oilbirds. Five players reached double figures, led by William Francis with 17 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Amaree Toney added 15 points, Freedom Leon 14, Idris Martin 13 and Zachary Julien 10, demonstrating the scoring depth Southside will have to contain.

The most revealing contest, however, could be the battle for possession. Spartans lead the league with 17.0 steals per game, while Southside commit the fewest turnovers at 13.5. If Spartans can turn their defensive pressure into extra scoring opportunities, they could threaten the unbeaten run. Southside's ability to protect the ball will be central to keeping control.

For Spartans, victory would deliver a third win and the distinction of being the first team to defeat Southside. For Southside, it would complete an unbeaten first round and set up Sunday's eagerly anticipated meeting with Caledonia Clippers. Before that showdown, though, comes a Spartans side with every reason to believe it can make Friday its night.

Oilbirds chase a breakthrough against TTPS

The opening game carries a different kind of urgency. Oilbirds are 0-4, but Obel Guerra's performances give TTPS ample reason to take the challenge seriously.

Guerra has accumulated 107 points in four games, placing him second in the league's scoring rankings. His averages of 26.8 points, 11.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks underline his influence at both ends. Even in the defeat to Spartans, he delivered 25 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks.

Tyrese Fields, averaging 13.0 points, provides another scoring option, while Rashan Hope contributes 8.2 rebounds per game. Oilbirds have players capable of troubling opponents; the task now is to turn those contributions into a complete winning performance.

Protecting possession will be crucial. Oilbirds average a league-high 28.8 turnovers per game, a costly obstacle for a team trying to break through. Reducing those giveaways would give Guerra and his teammates more opportunities to put pressure on TTPS.

TTPS look for an immediate response

TTPS also have a response to make after Sunday's 79-69 defeat to Caledonia Clippers left them at 2-2. Mikahail Williams supplied 16 points, seven rebounds, nine assists and four steals in that loss, while Fabrice Fisher scored 14 and Sadiki Guerra added 11.

The season figures show TTPS leading the league in field-goal shooting at 46.1 per cent and three-point accuracy at 37.2 per cent. Oilbirds will need to close down TTPS on the perimeter and limit the mistakes that could give them additional possessions.

Friday's double-header puts Southside's perfect record and Oilbirds' search for a breakthrough on the same court. Spartans want the league's biggest scalp; TTPS want an immediate return to winning ways. Pleasantville is the place where those ambitions collide.
